Who we are
Chief Executive Officer
Our CEO Michael Smallberger is a Marine Corps Veteran and founded Peoria Riverkeeper in order to protect and “clean up” the Illinois River and connecting bodies of water in 2024. Michael is a father of twin boys, and enjoys fishing, hiking, and being on the water in his free time. He also serves on Peoria’s Joint Commission for Racial Justice and Equity in their climate and environment workgroup, working with the city to improve environmental conditions in low income neighborhoods, and ensuring everyone has a voice when it comes to pollution.
Chief Financial Officer
Epifhany Vana serves as Peoria Riverkeeper’s Chief Financial Officer. Epifhany is a accounting major who currently getting her C.P.A. certification. She keeps track of all the financial records and operations of our organization, ensuring we are always accurate, organized, and within regulation. Epifhany also has a passion for yoga, and enjoys cooking, music, nature, and photography. Her many talents are invalubable to our team!
Chief Scientific Officer
Laurence Henderson is Peoria Riverkeeper’s Chief Scientific Officer. Laurence is a skilled photographer and videographer with a Master’s degree in Environmental, Economic, and Social Sustainability from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Drawing on his unique blend of professional expertise and academic background, he is dedicated to amplifying the mission of Peoria Riverkeeper and raising awareness of its vital work.
Chief Social Impact Officer
Aaron Chess is Peoria Riverkeeper’s Chief Social Impact Officer. Born and raised in Peoria, IL , he attended western Illinois university where he studied political since and pre law. He was one of the youngest candidates to run for Peoria city council and is an active community advocate. Aaron ensures our mission always has a focus on uplifting communities that need it most, and protecting those areas at risk of Environmental Justice threats.
Tribal Relations Manager
Nate Muckintubbee, is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, the Natchez Nation of Oklahoma, and maternally a member of Shaui Iksa. Also known by his Choctaw name, Ayimikimaiya, he is the founder and former president of TRIBE @ ISU, a Native American Student Association at Illinois State University. After graduating, Muckintubbee co-founded The TRIBE Companies, an Indigenous-owned organization specializing in tribal and professional identity. Through this venture, he collaborates with tribes, businesses, and nonprofits across the U.S. and Canada in the fields of brand identity and digital marketing.
We will be working with Nate on issues like tribal water quantification and legislation, strengthening local relations and equity for the local Native community, and are even aiming at bringing the Peoria Tribe home to Central,IL!
